Floral sketch, watercolour WIP

My mom and dad sent me a beautiful tulip bouquet for my birthday. They were mostly ruffled pink tulip variety and I took some photos of them at their prime to use as painting reference. What caught my attention for this watercolour sketch was the purple spotted freesia. Anyhow, here's a pic of my work in progress so far.

By Any Other Name (oil on canvas, 6"x6")

Funny story about this little painting: As usual, I handed over my iPad and asked Ron what he thought about this painting. He looked hard and long and looked confused. I laughed and asked him what was confusing and he says "what is it?" Wow! Is it just me or does this look like a rose? Of course once I spelled it out he could see it but it kind of made me wonder, haha. Still, I like it. Happy Friday!

Roses WIP update

This painting has changed lots since my last post. I must confess some serious frustration with this one! I have no photo reference for it because it began from chaos with my rose stamp. As a result I've struggled between representation (ie roses in vase) and abstraction (as it started out). In other texture and layers I saw the sphere (now a rose bowl) and its evolved from there. However, I've spent a lot of time "up in my head" thinking through light direction, glass, colour, etc. I've enjoyed all the painting and I feel like its coming together for me now, although I have a few things to change before I'm done.

Tomorrow is my birthday. Ron has the day off and we are going into Edmonton to shop and then out for dinner. Delta art has a big sale on and I think dropping by there will be a fun diversion. I have an order waiting for me but I'll definitely have a look around :-).

Mixed Media start on 24"x 24" canvas

Suffice to say... I'm messing with acrylic mediums, texture tools, and collage. Another beginning from chaos painting. These take a while to evolve - all options are open for a long, long time. It's confusing, messy, and usually ends up like this has...abstracted reality. It kind of resembles life. Have a great day!

A Pink (oil, 6"x6")

In today's painting session, I focused on pink almost exclusively. I've heard that pink is calming and I could use an island or two of calm right now. Between planning for our move, waiting for insurance quotes for basement damage, and sorting through belongings, I haven't had the energy and/or time to paint. When I say I focused... I mean it! I had to take my addled brain and my idle hands to my messed up art room (that's where the water damage is) and force them to focus on painting. It did me a world of good and I don't mind the result either. Cheers!

Royal rework (oil, 12"x12")

My oil version of "Royal" has been languishing in my studio awaiting some attention. I gave I a very few minutes to it today to see whether I could make a difference. I like it better with these few changes. What do you think?

Lily Cheer (oil, 8"x10")

Just a little bouquet from our yard to brighten up the house. I love both the bright yellow lilies contrasting with the dark red/green foliage and the green of the antique jar I put them in. I'm loving painting still life right now. Good thing because I haven't got enough time and/or energy to be painting outside much this year. Cheers!

Columbine (oil, 8"x10")

Here's a little plein air painting I did with my friend and mentor Sharon Williams a couple of weeks ago in her garden. I was struggling on this particular day due to having had dry brushes for several weeks. One of the most important things I've learned as an artist is this: keep your brushes wet if you want to learn! I really want to learn, therefore it's critical that I get painting again and stay painting regularly. Right now I'm working out how I can carve time for this out of a busy life... A few minutes at a time.
