Mixed Media Exercises

At our last creative water media class we reviewed the strengths of watercolour, acrylic inks, gouache, as well as watercolour pencils and crayons.  Sharon led us through a few studies.  These two of mine turned out kinda fun.  IMG_0669This ocean sketch was done with ink and watercolour, and… IMG_0668 some tiger lilies with ink, watercolour, and gouache. It was a lot of fun to experiment with the three together!  I’m going to miss these classes over the summer, but I’m looking forward incorporating some of these mixed media techniques into my paintings at home.  Cheers!

  1. Very nice! I would like to be more relaxed and impressionistic like that. I tend to get bogged down in details. I'm wondering what kind of ink and pen you used for these.

  2. Thanks Joyce, the inks were FW Inks http://www.dickblick.com/products/daler-rowney-fw-acrylic-water-resistant-artists-ink/

I don't use a pen [except to sign paintings]. I used a 1" flat on these and it worked pretty well - love that brush. I don't have the patience for small brushes like I used to. It helps to use a larger brush if you get bogged down in detail. I've got that problem at times too.

    Cheers!
